Abstract

The possibility to use electron microprobe for dating of rocks (or, rather, determination of the time of crystallization of minerals containing certain minimal amounts of radioactive elements) is known for almost 10 years (Montel et al. 1996, Suzuki - Adachi 1991). The use of large multi-layer crystals has improved the capabilities of current electron microprobes and enabled thus to extend significantly the possibilities of this method of dating. The present article tries to draw the principle of the method and its instrumental constraints and illustrate its application in our laboratory.
