Abstract

In this contribution, plant mega- and meso- fossils from the Peruc-Korycany Formation of the eastern part of the Bohemian Cretaceous Basin are described. They come from localities near the villages of Perálec (temporary outcrop of a sewage treatment plant west of the village) and Doly u Luže permanent outcrop in steep bank of a creek running through the village) in the Pardubice Region. The plant fossils occur in sandy mudstone layers (the Peruc Member) cropping out in basal parts of the Peruc-Korycany Formation. The plant fossils are numerous compressions of entire-margined, lanceolate leaves of angiosperms. Narrowly lanceolate leaves of “Grevilleaconstans Velenovský with narrow attenuate apex and cuneate base, and lanceolate leaves of Dicotylophyllum sp. with broadly cuneate base and attenuate apex are both common there. Trilobed dentate leaves with cuneate base of Araliaephyllum formosum (Heer) Greguš et J. Kvaček are rare. Plant mesofossils obtained by bulk maceration of sediment samples provided abundant megaspores of Sellaginaceae Verrucitriletes cf. dubius (Dijkstra) Potonié, and Isoetaceae Paxillitriletes cf. midas (Dijkstra) Hall et Nicolson. Angiosperm mesofossil remains were represented by rarely occurring small elongated-ovoid seeds of Spermatites sp., and larger circular seeds described as Carpolithes sp. Numerous mesofossils of Mauldinia cf. bohemica Eklund et J. Kvaček are represented by bi-lobed structures with three typically circular scars, located basally. They are interpreted as cladodia, a part of compound inflorescence / infructescence. They are associated with leaves of “Grevilleaconstans. Fossil charcoalified angiosperm wood is assigned to lauraceous taxon Paraphyllanthoxylon cf. marylandense Herendeen. It shows a diffuse-porous wood with indistinct growth rings.
Based on the analysis of preliminary fossil record, particularly on the presence of Mauldinia and megaspores of lycophytes, a reconstruction of the palaeoenvironment of both localities is suggested to have been a river flood plain (vegetation dominated by Mauldinia) running through coastal lowlands (abundant megaspores of lycophytes).
