Abstract

During the construction of the D8 motorway near Bilinka village, a cut was temporarily exposed where contact of Cretaceous and Quaternary deposits was found. Quaternary sediments consist mainly of coarse-grained massive, sub-horizontal and trough-cross bedded gravels, which are interpreted as alluvial deposits. Cretaceous sediments represent marine fine-grained sandstones and marls weathered into clayey eluvium. The contact of Cretaceous eluvium with coarse-grained gravels was strongly affected by soft-sediment deformations. The deformation features, morphologically in accordance with the cryoturbation structure, the load-cast, ball and-pillows structure, were documented. This type of structures can be formed due to frost action (cryoturbation) and could be very similar to those formed due to a density contrast between the upper and lower layers and differential loading (load-casting). The origin of these structures is the result of complex processes
