Abstract

The paper presents results of research focused on the Quaternary evolution of the Elbe valley in central part of the České středohoří mountains. We used the GIS morphometric analyses, relative dating of stony (boulder and scree) accumulations and interpretation of shallow profiles and outcrops in gullies to detect the young tectonic activity in the area and its role in the development of the valley. The results show approximately 100 m vertical difference between the tops of the valley sides as well as differences in evolution stage of the left (younger) and the right (older) side of the Elbe valley. These differences are discussed in relation to fault structures, and the hypothesis of vertical tectonic movement is presented.
