Quaternary in the Jalapa area (northern Nicaragua)
Abstract
The slope, outwash and fluvial sediments are developed in the wider surroundings of Jalapa. The thickest accumulations were identified in the foothill zone of the highest mountains (Cerro Jesus 1,793 m) in the west. A really limited lacustrine fine-grained sediments fill the intramountainous depressions. Fossil soils found within the outwash and fluvial sediments evidence of their polycyclic development. The sediments of alluvial fans (outwash) are the most expressive. Their thickness usually ranges between 40-60 m. Nevertheless it can reach over 100 m in places. Differences in thickness evidence the existence of a buried erosional relief and influence of neotectonic movements. The thermal spring in the Río Aquas Caliente valley is important from the hydrogeological point of view. Natural hazards include landslides, fast growing alluvial fans, headward erosion and especially flash floods.
