Abstract

Biostratigraphic evaluation of the Flysch Western Carpathians and Carpathian Foredeep according to study of calcareous nannoplankton was performed for the geological map-sheet 24-431 Slapanice. Sediments were sampled from the isolated outcrops during the geological survey. The relative age of the flysch deposits was stated from the upper Middle Eocene up to the Oligocene-Miocene boundary within the zone interval NP16-NN1. Sediments provided stratigraphic nannoplankton markers Cribrocentrum reticulatum, Isthmolithus recurvus, Chiasmolithus oamaruensis, Ch. altus, Pontosphaera enormis, Cyclicargolithus abisectus and Helicosphaera carteri. The cooling in the uppermost Eocene is marked by the occurrence of large and broadly elliptical placoliths of Reticulofenstra umbilicus and by the absence of discoasterids. The sea-level fluctuation and the specific development of depocentre during the Oligocene are reflected in the quantitative rise in genus Pontosphaera and by the bloom of Dictyococcites bisectus and Cyclicargolithus abisectus in its upper part. The Lower Miocene, NN1-NN4 zone interval is characterized by the poor autochthonous nannofossil record. Shallow epicontinental sea provided favourable conditions for a bloom of the genus Helicosphaera (H. carteri, H. ampliaperta, H. mediterranea) and small specimens of genus Reticulofenestra. In the upper part of this interval Sphenolithus heteromorphus appears. The Middle Miocene marine ingression is reflected by the nannoflora input. The lower part of zone NN5 is delimitated by the short horizon with Helicosphaera waltrans. The overlying strata are usually rich in nannoflora with high numbers of Helicosphaera vedderi and Coccolithus sp. Assemblages include also endemic Paratethyan species Helicosphaera walbersdorfensis and Umbilicosphaera rotula. Nannoplankton NPand NN zones were correlated with the regional stages of Central Paratethys.
